Barong and Keris Dance performance.
Barong Keris dance is one of the many variants of barong dance that developed in Balinese society. This dance has been packed into a spectacle that attracts the attention of ordinary people, especially the tourists (both domestic and foreign). This dance is shown regularly in Batu Bulan area, Gianyar, every morning at 9:30 to 11:30 pm. Despite being a mass performances enjoyed by many people, the value of the sacredness of this dance is maintained. Like Barong dance in general, Barong Keris dance tells the eternal feud between the Barong figures which symbolizes the good with Rangda that manifests evil. Both of these figures engage in an endless battle, each other unable to knock each other down. The eternal struggle has a philosophy that in life, goodness and evil will always present side by side and balance each other. Barong Keris dance packs the philosophy in a story consisting of five innings. Once, there appeared a group of people who then tried to attack the Barong because they thought his son had been eaten by Barong. There was a fierce fight between the three men with the Barong and the apes. In the end, the monkey managed to hurt one of the attackers. In the first half, two dancers appeared as followers of Rangda. Both dancers are looking for followers of Kunti who will face to her guard.
In the second half, a Rangda follower transforms into a demon who turns the two followers of Goddess Kunti into a rage. The two followers then meet the guard and together go to Kunti. In the third round, Dewi Kunti appeared with her son, Sadewa (Sahadewa), who was once promised to be handed over to Rangda as a sacrificial offering. Dewi Kunti actually did not have the heart to sacrifice Sadewa, but appeared a figure of demons who mastered the thoughts of Kunti and his patih. Sadewa was arrested and tied up in the middle of the forest – where Rangda is located. In the midst of that condition, the God of Shiva appeared before Sadewa and granted him immortality. Rangda finally emerged and intend to kill Sadewa, without knowing the power that has been given the god Shiva. Rangda repeatedly tried to attack Sadewa, but none of the attacks hurt him. Rangda was finally surrendered and subdued on Sadewa and begged to be released from the curse so as to enter Paradise. Sadewa complied with Rangda’s request and rescued him so that Rangda was finally able to experience Moksha. In the last section, a Rangda follower named Kalika tried to confront Sadewa and also begged to be saved. Sadewa denied Kalika’s request and there was a fierce battle between the two. To compensate Sadewa, Kalika transformed into a wild boar and then became a bird. Although several times changed form, Kalika always lost by Sadewa. Kalika was then transformed into a figure Rangda that can not be defeated by Sadewa. Sadewa also changed his form to Barong. The power of Barong’s incarnation Sadewa and Rangda Kalika’s incarnation has a balanced power, so it cannot beat each other. The Sadewa / Barong followers tried to attack Rangda, but one by one was defeated. At the will of the Almighty, the Barong followers were given strength so immune to attack. Barong Keris dance is closed with thrilling attractions from the dancers who showed their immunity against the puncture of keris. To enjoying this story, please feel free to contact us.
